화들짝 (hwadeuljjak)

*jolts in surprise*

What it means

A big, startled reaction — jumping in shock. Much stronger than 움찔.

Where you'll see it in manhwa

• Someone taps a shoulder from behind
• A sudden loud noise
• Waking up to find someone very close

How to say it

Romanized as hwadeuljjak. It's a emotion effect (feelings drawn as sound: heartbeats, flinches, blushes) and its rarity is rare.

Similar sound effects

• 움찔 umjjil — *flinch*
• 벌떡 beoltteok — *springs up*
